5.4 Health safety issues
We are available to participate in a larger consortium where we can provide support on analysis concerning the safety of the new products or materials in terms of CRM compounds and SVHC. We can also evaluate occupational exposure. Our expertise is related with GC/MS and HPLC techniques, and we can detect volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds as phthalates and siloxanes, PCBs, etc. Recycled products that give origin to new products or are incorporated into other materials to be used by people should be subjected to surveillance measures concerning their safety to human beings. But also the environment should be respected. Recycling is part of the solution, but the processes can not aggravate the pollution to air, soil and water. Also the safety of workers should be assured.
The INEGI - Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from the University of Porto is an industry-oriented RTO with research activity in the areas of new technologies for advanced production processes, experimental mechanics, applied mechanics, energy, new materials and the development of new products and systems. INEGI’s research infrastructure includes a broad set of well-equipped laboratories and an extensive engineering tools base for supporting its R&D activity as well as the production of industrial or commercial prototypes. For the specific case of this offer, the Laboratory of Indoor Air quality is equipped with two GC/MS connected to thermal desorption equipments, one HPLC equipment to conduct chemical analysis on products but also in air samples, and several test chambers to conduct emission tests on construction materials and products. The Lab has several equipments to assess professional exposition: pumps, particulate matter and ultrafine particles monitors, etc.
