4. Recycling and Re-use of End-of-Life Products Recycling and Re-use of End-of-Life Products
Tübitak RUTE is seeking roles either as Project coordinator or partner roles in this Project call. Energy Storage Systems group under RUTE is working on recycling and regeneration of spent lithium-ion batteries. We have several capabilities that we can contribute to this call.
1-) We have demonstrated that we can regenerate spent lithium-ion batteries composed of LiCoO2 cathode materials, a widely used cathode in portable electronics. Crystallographically damaged and electrochemically almost inactive LiCoO2 cathode active materials were successfully turned into a well crystalline LiCoO2 cathode active material supported by excellent electrochemical results. We can receive these end-of-life cathode powders to regenerate into working cathode powders. This could be our role if 1st option is desired.
2-) We have also demonstrated that we can obtain Cobalt as hydroxide or other salt forms from spent Li-ion batteries composed of LiCoO2 cathode materials. We obtain Li salts from these processes as well. Together with these two valuable powders, we aim to produce highly pure Li and Co salts that can be utilized in other sectors in addition to the battery industry.
3-) Our group has a lithium-ion battery pilot-scale production facility. If desired recycling companies can cooperate with us to make final lithium-ion cells. These include prismatic or pouch cells made by recycled cathode or anode materials that can be provided by other partners.
Briefly, we are seeking those who can help us to regenerate or recycle spent lithium-ion batteries into working lithium-ion cells by regenerating or recycle them to valuable metal precursors such as Li and Co salts.
RUTE is an abbreviation of Rail Transport Technologies Institute that belongs to directly Tübitak. Its missions are i-) to develop new technologies for safe, fast, and efficient rail transportation ii-) to coordinate large-scale technology transfer agreements to meet the needs of the rail transportation sector iii-) to cooperate with all sectoral stakeholders, especially the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). It has 6 research fields but we are here on behalf of the Energy Storage Systems group. As an ESS group we have capabilities of Synthesis of Chemical parts of the Cell, Cell Production at the pouch and prismatic level, Cell, Module, and Battery Pack Development, Battery Management System. In the pouch cell production line, located in 55m2 dry room, we can produce 25.000 cells per year ranging from 1Ah-18Ah capacities. In a prismatic cell production line, located in 320m2 dry room, we can produce up to 15.000 cells per year ranging from 3,30 and 60Ah capacities. Pouch cells we make can cycle up to 4000 times with an average of 75% capacity retention. For the last 4 years, our group has focused on developing lithium-ion batteries for Sattelite applications. We also have other large government contracts and Horizon 2020 awarded project called Helios. In Helios, the role of RUTE is to develop hybrid battery module architecture containing two different cell types. Very much recently we also launched a large RD Project which spans from the synthesis of next-gen cathodes, anodes such as Tin and Si-based for higher energy densities than the state of art Li-ion battery with unconventional current collectors for the rapid charge to reach 80% SOC less than 20 min. At ESS, we have 14 staff in which 11 of them were either possess MSc or Ph.D. degrees. We have also 1 post-doc, 4 Ph.D. students, 2 undergrad interns.
