Exploration of graphite deposits, geological and geophysical surveys, mineralogy, geochemistry, resource estimations, modelling of production methods
1. Supply of raw materials from exploration and mining
Two graphite provinces in Turkey will be explored by using geological and geophysical techniques in our project. The origin of graphite deposits, their relations with host rocks, lithological, mineralogical and geochemical properties, and the relationships between structural elements (fault, fissure, layer, foliation etc.) will be revealed through geological surveys. We use ground geophysics methods to estimate the dimensions of mineralized areas and find out new graphite occurrences. The reserve and grades of graphite deposits will be modelled in 3 dimensions (3D) using geological and geophysical findings. The selection and modelling of production methods in graphite mining will be made by considering geological factors such as crystalinity type (amorphous, crystalline, flake), reserve, geometry and grade of graphite deposits and the relationship between graphites and their host rocks. Turkey has graphite quarry operated by open pit methods. We are planning to cooperate with international partners experienced in the field of exploration of graphite deposits using airborne geophysics methods and underground graphite quarry mining.
Graphite is widespread used in refractory and high-technology applications in industrialized countries due to its unique properties such as low density, high resistance to thermal shock, high electrical conductivity, inertness, compressibility, elasticity, and lubricity. High-technology uses of graphite make critical industrial mineral. According to 2019 data, the world's total producible graphite reserves are over 300 million tons. Turkey has 90 million tons of graphite reserves, but graphite production unfortunately is not corresponding to graphite reserves in Turkey. The low production values develop out of insufficient researches on geology, reserve and grade of graphite deposits in Turkey. In graphite projections, it is predicted that the demand for graphite will increase 7 times in the next 10 years. Turkish project team have experience on the exploration of metallic and industrial mineral deposits using geological and geophysical methods and production modelling studies of mineral deposits.

Most of the work packages will be carried out with the ITU and BAUN team under the leadership of AKU. We are looking for expertise in the field of exploration of graphite deposits using airborne geophysics methods and underground graphite quarry mining.
Mining department at Afyon Kocatepe University, which was established in 2002, started undergraduate education in 2003, in the same year Master's and Doctoral programs were opened in 2009. In our department, there are two departments as Mining Management and Mineral Processing Departments, and there are distinguishing academics. We have Mining Operation, Mineral Preparation and Enrichment, Mine Ventilation and Occupational Safety and Accredited Natural Stone and Aggregate Analysis Laboratories.
Until today, 362 undergraduate, 34 graduate and 2 doctorate students have graduated from our department and currently 126 undergraduate, 58 master's and 5 doctoral students continue their education.
